Yellow roses of quality are rare; many introductions from the past have been blackspot magnets doomed to perish after a short time in the garden. Thankfully, things have been improving of late, and St. Patrick is surely a keeper. Beautiful, exhibition quality blooms cover a healthy shrub graced with grey-green foliage. The blooms are the show-stoppers: high-centered, golden yellow sometimes cooled by a green tint which is heightened as the weather warms. Growth is robust, stems are long, and repeat bloom is excellent. A 1996 All-America Rose Selection, St. Patrick was only the second rose hybridized by an amateur (Frank Strickland) in fifty-five years to win this most coveted award. St. Patrick was bred from Brandy (a rose of great beauty but with cultural requirements not for the faint of heart) and Gold Medal, an excellent grandiflora. |
