While a challenge to grow, 'Sterling Silver' is one of the roses which led me into rose gardening.

'Sterling Silver' is notable for its blooms, which are lovely in form and color.  Soft lavender flowers are superb in their classic hybrid tea form.  While recommended for adventurous gardeners or those who must have a classic lavender, alas, 'Sterling Silver' will surely break the heart of most of those who attempt to grow it in their gardens.  Lack of cold hardiness, lack of vigor, stinginess with Sterling Silverbloom production, and susceptibility to the usual diseases make 'Sterling Silver' a weak candidate for the garden.  Gardeners who live in dry climates where temperatures are not prone to cold and hot extremes do report success.

Because of her lovely blooms, 'Sterling Silver' is still widely available each spring in garden centers.  However, she can only be recommended for gardeners who are prepared to coddle and pamper.  (But, oh those blooms are magnificent.)

A more dependable rose which might appeal to those looking for purple or lavender is 'Angel Face'.
