A 1965 All-America Rose Selection, Mister Lincoln is a classic dark red rose which is still widely grown, considered by many the finest red Hybrid Tea ever. Its popularity is deserved, as it sports urn-shaped, intensely fragrant, dark magenta-red blooms on long stems. Growth habit is strong, and disease resistance is good. Petals are thick and velvety, and the blooms last well as cut flowers. The foliage is leathery and new leaves are dark red, making the plant attractive even when not in bloom. Mister Lincoln is a big, robust plant, growing to four to six feet. Mister Lincoln thrives in areas with hot days and warm nights; I have never personally seen balling problems with Mister Lincoln; it has been suggested that warm nights assist with the unfurling of Mr. Lincoln's thick petals. Mister. Lincoln is a fine cut flower, but cut before blooms fully open as Mister Lincoln's true glory is in the bud and half-open stage. Use Mister Lincoln in the rear of the border or as a striking specimen rose in a prominent spot. The combination of vertical growth, disease resistant flowers, and perfect buds make this one to position where all passers-by can appreciate it. |
