'Wenlock' bears loosely cupped blooms which start medium red and age to cerise.   The flowers are produced freely throughout the season on a shrub which can reach eight or ten feet in gardens of the American south.  Canes are well-covered with red prickles, and the foliage is dark green.

Unfortunately, 'Wenlock' may be need to be sprayed for blackspot in cool regions.  Due to better health (and according to David Austin himself, better form and color), 'L.D. Braithwaite' is considered to be a superior selection for a red English rose.

Named for a limestone ridge in Shropshire, Wenlock Edge, referenced in the poem The Welsh Marshes, by A.E. Housman.
