Also Known As: 'Country Squire' ![]() Introduced: 1977, David Austin, UK Class: Shrub / English Zones: 4b-9 Parentage: 'The Knight' x 'Château de Clos Vougeot' Flowers: Dark red, 4 inches, double, cupped Size: 4 feet x 4 feet (warm climates) 4 feet x 4 feet (cool climates) Fragrance: Strong 'Old Rose' Of note: Long lasting as a cut flower, deep red color, and superb fragrance. 'The Squire' has many strengths, and only one noticeable weakness (more about that further on). Lovely, fully cupped blooms are a red so dark that they seem to smolder. Fragrance is outstanding, reminiscent of the classic 'Old Rose' scent. Repeat bloom is reliable throughout the entire growing season. Growth habit is upright, and the dark green foliage is lovely when healthy. Unfortunately, 'The Squire' is prone to mildew (this susceptibility to mildew is the weakness mentioned above). If you live in areas where mildew is prevalent, you may want to choose another red rose. However, in sunny, warm areas less concern is required. |
