The Prince Rose
Introduced:  1990, David Austin, UKThe Prince
Class:  Shrub / English
Zones:  4b-9
Parentage:  'Lilian Austin' x 'The Squire'
Flowers:  Dark red/crimson ages to royal purple; rosette, double.
Size:  4 x 3 feet (warm climates)
3 x 3 feet (cool climates)
Fragrance  Strong, Damask

Of note:  Excellent fragrance. Compact growth.

Like many of David Austin's introductions, 'The Prince' has excellent fragrance and lovely blooms; however, 'The Prince' is a unique rose because of the magnificent color of its flowers.  Fat, rounded buds open to flowers of dark crimson; as they mature, the flowers age to a dark purple which is truly memorable.  Reminiscent of the purple roses of past centuries, 'The Prince' is a modern day masterpiece.

'The Prince' is not a vigorous grower, topping out at three or perhaps four feet in warm climates.  Foliage is medium green and generally healthy, but mildew can be an issue.  Repeat bloom is reliable, although not enthusiastic.   Fragrance is superb, a trait which David Austin roses are known for.
