The Countryman(25867 bytes)
Class:  Shrub / English
Zones:  4b-9
Parentage:  'Lilian Austin' x 'Comte de Chambord'
Flowers:  Clear pink pompons, 3" - 4".
Size:  6 feet x 6 feet (warm climates)
3 feet x 3 feet (cool climates)
Fragrance:  Strong Damask
Of note:  Flowers of excellent old rose form on a disease resistant plant.

Not widely available, 'The Countryman' is a fine rose.  A backcross between an English Rose ('Lilian Austin') and a Portland ('Comte de Chambord'), 'The Countryman' bears three to four inch flowers of loose pompons which are strongly fragrant.   Repeat flowering will be assured if deadheading is practiced after the first flush of bloom (a nice hip display will occur in fall if late flowers are left undisturbed on the shrub).

Disease resistance is good.  Growth habit is lax.  Either prune hard to form a low-growing, bushy shrub, or grow as a  six feet tall arching shrub or pillar. Foliage is large and dark green.

Named for a British magazine.
