'Evelyn' (pronounced EVE-lyn) is a rose that will fit well into the perennial garden.  Grouped with blues and grays, her soft apricot color will blend superbly.  Add excellent fragrance (which David Austin considers to be in a class with 'Gertrude Jekyll') to the mix, and you have a winning combination.  Growth is robust and vigorous, although 'Evelyn' resents hard pruning.  Especially during the first year after planting, clipping the flowers away should be the hardest cutting considered (with the exception of cutting away dead canes).

For best chance of rebloom, regular deadheading is recommended.  Growth habit is tall and upright, and the canes take on an arching form as they mature.  Foliage is susceptible to blackspot so, unfortunately, a spray program may have to be implemented.  Proper care taken when planting will definitely result in greater health and vigor later.  'Evelyn' is not one of those plants that can be planted and left to fend for herself, so new rose gardeners may want to consider roses which are forgiving of less than ideal planting or culture.

Named to mark the introduction of a new line of toiletries by the firm Crabtree and Evelyn.
