rose don juan
Introduced:
1958, Malandrone, USArose don juan
Class:  Large-flowered climber
Zones:  5b (w/protection)-10
Parentage:  'New Dawn' seedling x 'New Yorker'
Flowers:  Dark red, double, cupped, 5"

Size:  8 to 12  feet
Fragrance:  Strong

Of note:  Hybrid Tea flowers on a climber.
Excellent fragrance.  Orange hips.

'Don Juan' bears dark red buds which are so dark they seem to smolder.  The flowers are exhibition quality.  Blossoms are borne in clusters throughout the entire season, and dramatic orange hips will add interest to the fall and winter garden.

Unlike its parent 'New Dawn', 'Don Juan' is not reliably winter hardy in cold climates, but disease resistance is good.  Foliage is dark green and glossy.  Because 'Don Juan' tops out at twelve feet or so, it makes a very manageable pillar or trellis rose.
