rose gardening

portland roses
Portland roses as a class are of a bygone era, and most interest is from a historical perspective picrosederescht.JPG (29641 bytes) as they were the first generation which owed repeat flowering habit to the China class of Roses. While only a few varieties of Portland roses are offered commercially, these have stood the test of time and deserve a place in our gardens. Portland roses offer repeat flowering on compact, disease resistant, shrubs with blooms of Old Rose character, both in form and fragrance.

Colors tend to be in the pink ranges, including dark, almost scarlet blooms. Habit of growth is upright, lacking some of the grace of the arching shrubs. However, Portland roses stay relatively small (3-4 feet) are suited for gardens where space is at a premium (although in every garden I have ever had, no matter what size, space was and is always at a premium!!).
