China Roses were seminal in the evolution of garden roses in that they offered repeat
flowering (remontancy) and double blooms. To comprehend just how
important these roses
are, imagine if the only choice in roses for your garden were
single
petaled, one season bloom! While Europeans may have claimed these roses as their
new discovery, in fact Chinas were brought back from the Far East, where the Chinese had
been breeding remontant, double roses for many centuries.
Chinas, besides repeat flowering, are tough, able to withstand heat, indifferent soil
conditions, high humidity (China roses' petals have a silky appearance and open well in
high humidity, rarely balling), and alkaline soils. They are exceptional roses for
Southerners, but north of Zone 6, winter hardiness will be suspect. Chinas are delicate in
appearance, but tough in demeanor.
Flower color is pink, red, and copper. Trivia question: Is there a white China rose?
Yes, there is one, Ducher, a lovely soft white on a rose smallish in stature.
Scent tends to be a fruity and sweet. Foliage is delicate, and Chinas may range from small
bushes to large climbers. If you are located in Zone 6 or south, be sure to include
Chinas in your garden. |
