Introduced: 1985, David Austin, UK ![]() Class: Shrub / English Zones: 4-9 Parentage: 'Yellow Cushion' x 'Aloha' Flowers: Soft pink to apricot Shallow cupped, 4 to 5 inches across Size: 8 feet x 6 feet (warm climates) 5 feet x 4 feet (cool climates) Fragrance: Strong, fruity Strengths: Superb re-bloom; strong fragrance; vigorous (really vigorous) growth, and good disease resistance. Abraham Darby' is one of the most widely grown David Austin roses, and with good reason. 'Abraham Darby' is a shrub with classic flowers that also has the desired qualities of wonderful fragrance, excellent re-bloom, strong growth and disease resistance. 'Abraham Darby' is the kind of result David Austin had in mind when he began his search for the 'New' English Rose. Large blossoms can vary in color from soft peach to pink to apricot, and each perfectly formed flower is truly lovely. More, the fragrance is rich and memorable. 'Abraham Darby' has long flexible canes which can lead some gardeners to become frustrated with the awkward form of the shrub. Accept the growth habit and train 'Abraham Darby' as a pillar or moderate climber, and success is assured. Disease resistance is good, but rust may be a problem in areas where this malady is prevalent. Abraham Darby was one of the founders of the Industrial Revolution. |
